Depending on the underlying cause of hair loss, women can benefit from the transplantation of unaffected hair to areas of hair loss. Hair restoration surgery is most effective for women suffering from androgenetic alopecia, traction alopecia, or whose scarring alopecia has been successfully resolved. The first step toward a successful hair transplant surgery is to definitively diagnose the cause of hair loss. For that, you’ll need a consultation with Dr. Gray.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) for Women

FUT, and surgical hair transplantation in general, works because some hair follicles are vulnerable to damage by hormones while others are resistant. In a Follicular Unit Transplant procedure, Dr. Gray moves hair follicles from a donor area to the balding areas of the scalp.

Dr. Gray is uniquely qualified, from 30 years in the OR as an anesthesiologist, to ensure your comfort throughout your FUT procedure. He is always concerned about your well-being, and he uses great care in administering local anesthetics to result in the least amount of discomfort during injection.

Under local anesthesia, a strip of tissue is removed from the donor area. Tiny grafts of 1, 2, or 3 individual hairs are dissected and treated with ATP and follicular regeneration treatment to give the cells energy and nutrients to grow. The grafts are then transplanted via tiny incisions, called recipient sites, to create a new hairline according to your individualized hair restoration plan.

Dr. Gray precisely arranges and positions the grafts. History of hair loss, desired density, volume, and the likelihood of future hair loss are all taken into account in the FUT procedure. Thanks to an artistic eye and expert precision, Dr. Gray is able to achieve an unbelievably natural-looking hairline that follows your natural pattern of hair growth.

What is Dr Gray’s Role in a Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant procedure:

  1. Local anesthesia is used on the scalp to provide the patient with the most comfortable experience possible.
  2. A donor strip is skillfully taken from the area of the head that is most resistant to balding.
  3. Under a microscope, the individual follicular units are removed from the strip.
  4. Tiny incisions in the scalp are made for recipient sites of the hair follicles using a fine needle-point instrument.
  5. Individual follicular units are placed into the recipient sites in the areas of hair loss.
  6. Hair Follicle Regeneration is applied to promote healing and stimulate hair growth.
  7. Very long acting local anesthetic is injected for prolonged pain relief after the procedure.

While strip harvesting provides natural results because of the size and precision of the surgery, the natural-looking aspect of follicular unit transplantation is, in part, determined by the doctor's artistic ability to perform the transplant. During your consultation, Dr. Gray will take photographs and study your hair pattern to determine where the individual follicular units need to be placed to achieve the most natural-looking results.

At the end of the procedure, Dr. Gray administers a very long-acting local anesthetic, used in operating rooms, to help patients recover from surgery and decrease their dependence on narcotics. For our purposes, the pain relief lasts well beyond the end of the procedure; we have patients who drive themselves three hours home after surgery because of Dr. Gray's planning. Having dedicated 30 years to anesthesiology, Dr. Gray is keenly aware of your comfort and needs at every moment in your hair restoration surgery.
