Propecia, or Finasteride was FDA-approved as an oral prescription hair regrowth pill for men in 1998, and it is one of just 3 FDA-approved treatments for men’s hair loss. However, we generally think of it as a treatment only for men, but some postmenopausal women also benefit from this medication. Propecia has proven to be extremely effective in the treatment of male pattern baldness, because it prevents the conversion of testosterone to DHT. It’s very effective for slowing down genetic hair loss, and thousands of men use it without ever experiencing adverse side effects. Still, treatment with Propecia does involve an element of risk.
The role of DHT in male pattern baldness
The key mechanism in male pattern baldness is the adverse effect of DHT molecules on genetically sensitized hair follicles. Although life cycles of hair follicles are predetermined, DHT will shorten them. Shortened life cycles create miniaturization, resulting in thin, small, and colorless individual hairs. Over time, the life cycles of genetically vulnerable hair follicles will cease, a significant number of follicles will disappear, and alopecia or baldness becomes noticeable. Finasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor that works by decreasing the production of DHT in tissues in the scalp and preventing the conversion of testosterone into DHT.
Even though oral finasteride is 90% effective, concerns about side effects motivated researchers to explore benefits of a compounded topical finasteride preparation, Formula 82F.
Formula 82F offers the synergistic approach of the only two medications FDA approved for hair regrowth. Formula 82F contains (5%) Minoxidil and (.25%) Finasteride along with a topical steroid to improve efficacy, reduce irritation, complimented by other proprietary ingredients that enhance the formula’s overall effectiveness, stability, and usability.
It is well-accepted Minoxidil is a potent growth stimulator, causing resting follicles to produce hair, and weak follicles to produce longer thicker and more pigmented hair over time with consistent use. Oral finasteride reduces dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a known trigger for hair loss, to improve hair growth. New research suggests that topical finasteride can be an effective treatment for hair loss and may reduce the chance of side effects that may occur with oral medication.
Formula 82F typically works to protect and enhance hair growth wherever there are weakened hair follicles or areas “at-risk.” Common treatment areas include the crown/vertex area, top of the scalp, as well as the frontal/temple areas.
Who should use Formula 82F Topical Finasteride?
Formula 82F offers the powerful DHT-reducing effect of finasteride along with a deeply penetrating minoxidil formulation in a non-greasy, user-friendly, hairstyle friendly, compounded topical prescription formula that may be appropriate for men and some postmenopausal women in the medical management of hair loss. Finasteride can prevent hair loss in the area up to and including the crown, so for any man with a great deal of growing hair that could be retained, Propecia is undoubtedly an option. It is also a possible consideration for those for whom hair transplantation is not likely.
Who should NOT use Formula 82F Topical Finasteride?
Women of childbearing age should NOT use or come into contact with Formula 82F or areas topically treated with the medication for at least three hours due to a risk of birth defects in a developing male fetus. Like all topical medications, keep Formula 82F and treated areas safely out of reach of children. Please refer to the pharmacy product insert for further information.
What are the typical side effects of Formula 82F compared to other treatments?
In patients with a light complexion and skin tone, the scalp may appear slightly more pink than usual due to increased blood flow from the treatment. Redness, dryness, flaking, inflammation and discomfort at the scalp can occur but are rare with with Formula 82F because it has anti-inflammatory properties and contains absolutely NO propylene glycol (found in over-the-counter minoxidil solutions).
For patients concerned about the risk of sexual side effects from oral finasteride, research suggests that Formula 82F which contains topical finasteride may significantly reduce those risks. Discontinue therapy and notify Dr. Gray immediately if you experience any side effects from a treatment.
Can I use Formula 82F with Other Treatments?
Hereditary Hair Loss is a medical condition that responds very well to a multi-therapy treatment approach. Formula 82F Topical Finasteride can be used in conjunction with our Hair Follicle Regeneration Treatment, Low-Level Laser Therapy, and oral treatments because it works with a completely different, non-redundant mechanism than the other hair growth therapies mentioned.
For certain men, Propecia is an excellent complement to hair transplantation surgery. After a hair transplant, transplanted hair should not undergo much miniaturization; however, the original hair follicles in the recipient area can continue to miniaturize and thin. With this in mind, it is crucial to proactively use medical treatment, like Propecia, to slow down the miniaturization process and hair loss while maintaining good density in the transplanted area
